A Family Filled With The Peace Of God

A Family Filled With The Peace Of God

"The peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:7).

Bible Reading of the Year: 1 Chronicles 15-16

In the 9th century, in the midst of political conflict and ecclesiastical tensions within the Byzantine Empire, there was a simple family known for their faithfulness, the family of Theophanes the Confessor. Theophanes and his wife chose to live in godliness and obedience to God. When pressure came as a result of theological differences and persecution of those who maintained the orthodox faith, the family did not retaliate with anger or panic.

Instead, they remain alive in prayer, tranquillity, and the belief that God is taking care of them. Even when faced with suffering and exile, they showed an attitude of peace that transcended circumstances. The people around them saw something different, an inner peace that could not be explained humanly. That is the peace of God that is manifest in family life.

Philippians 4:7 affirms that God's peace is not just an ordinary feeling of tranquillity, but a spiritual reality that "surpasses all understanding." In theological studies, this term refers to eirēnē tou Theou, which is peace that comes from God Himself and works actively to protect (phroureō) the hearts and minds of believers.

That is, this peace is protective, like the guardian that protects the human mind from anxiety, fear, and emotional turmoil. In the context of the family, the peace of God is the foundation of relationship stability, especially in the midst of the pressures of life.

There are three practical applications that can be made to build a family filled with the peace of God:

First, bring every concern in prayer. The previous verse (Philippians 4:6) emphasises the importance of leaving all things to God. Families who pray together will learn to let go of anxiety and entrust their lives to God.

Second, keep your mind with God's word. The peace of God works in the heart and mind. Therefore, it is important for families to fill their minds with the truth of the word, not with fear or negative thoughts.

Third, building mutually reinforcing relationships. Peace is not only vertical (with God), but also horizontal (with others). An attitude of mutual support, forgiveness, and understanding will create a peaceful family atmosphere.

In the end, a family filled with the peace of God does not mean that it is free from problems, but that it has a peace that is not shaken by circumstances. Peace is present because Christ is the centre of family life.

Prayer:
O Lord God of peace, we are grateful for Your promise that nourishes our hearts and minds. Teach us to leave every worry to You and live in firm faith. Fill our families with Your peace, that we may be a light and a witness to the world. In the name of the Lord Jesus, we pray. Amen.
