Do Not Fail to Receive God's Grace

Do Not Fail to Receive God's Grace

“See to it that no one strays from the grace of God, lest there grow bitter roots that cause disturbances and defile many”" (Hebrews 12:15).

In the course of the believer's life, there is one danger that is often unrealised: not simply falling into great sin, but slowly moving away from God's grace. Many people are still actively worshipping, still serving, still outwardly visible, but their hearts are beginning to lose joy, peace, and intimacy with God. The letter of Hebrews reminds us that a person can “fail to receive God's grace.” This is not to say that God's grace is not enough, but that man can harden his heart so that he no longer lives in that grace.

Grace is the basis of salvation and the strength of Christian life. Without grace, man would live in bitterness, spiritual exhaustion, and the destruction of relationships. Therefore, God's words invite us to keep our hearts in His grace.

1. God's Grace Must Be Guarded With Earnestness

God's Word says: “See to it that no one strays from the grace of God...” (Hebrews 12:15). The word “take care” indicates a spiritual responsibility. Living in grace does not mean living carelessly. Believers are called to continue to maintain a relationship with God through prayer, the word, repentance, and obedience.

Many people start out living a Christian life with enthusiasm, but slowly become spiritually cold. A heart that was once soft became hard. Worship becomes a routine. Service becomes a formality. They have not left the church physically, but their hearts have been far from God.

John Calvin once said, “No man can stand firm without being constantly nourished by the grace of God.” These words remind us that the spiritual life cannot survive on its own. We need God's grace every day. Just as the body needs food, the soul also needs God's grace to stay alive.

Therefore, never feel spiritually strong enough. People who feel they are the strongest often become caught off guard. Satan does not always destroy one's faith through great sin; sometimes, he does it through spiritual exhaustion, small compromises, and a heart that slowly turns away from God.

2. The Root of Bitterness Hinders Grace

God's Word continues: “... that there may not grow bitter roots that cause disturbance and defile many” (Hebrews 12:15). Bitter roots speak of inner wounds, anger, disappointment, envy, and unresolved forgiveness. Bitterness often starts with small things: hurtful words, betrayal, unfair treatment, or prayers that God has not answered. If not left to God, the wound will grow into spiritual poison.

Interestingly, the Hebrew writer uses the word “root.” The roots are not immediately visible, but quietly grow below the surface. Many people seem fine on the outside but harbour deep bitterness in their hearts.

Charles Spurgeon said, “Bitterness is the poison that one drinks while wishing that another person dies.” How true is this word? A bitter person is actually hurting himself. Bitterness steals peace, destroys relationships, and even hinders spiritual growth. Even more dangerously, bitterness can “defile many.” One bitter heart can transmit wounds, gossip, conflict, and division to the community.

Therefore, God calls us to learn to forgive. To forgive does not mean to forget the wound, but to surrender the right of vengeance to God. God's grace can only flow through a heart that is willing to be restored.

3. God's Grace Restores and Strengthens

Grace not only saves man from sin, but also heals a wounded heart. God doesn't want us to live in the past. In Christ, there is restoration, new strength, and living hope. God's Word says: “My grace is sufficient for you, for it is in weakness that my power is made perfect” (2 Corinthians 12:9). God's grace works most evidently when man is aware that he is weak. People who rely on themselves will easily fall into pride or despair. But those who rely on God will find new strength every day.

A. W. Tozer said, “Grace is the goodness of God given to those who do not deserve it.” This is the beauty of the gospel. God doesn't love us because we're perfect, but because He is loving. Even when we fail, God still opens His hand to restore us. Today, God invites each of us to return to dwell in His grace. Don't let bitterness, sin, or disappointment keep us away from God. Come to Christ with an open heart. For it is only in His grace that the human soul finds true restoration.
