Families Who Worship God

Families Who Worship God
“But if you do not think it good to worship the Lord, choose on this day whom you will worship... but I and my household, we will worship the LORD!” (Joshua 24:15).

In the 4th century, in the midst of great pressures and changes in church history after the persecution, there were Christian families who remained faithful to their faith. One of the most memorable stories is about the family of Gregory of Nazianzus. His father, later known as Gregory Nazianzenus the Elder, along with his mother, Nonna, built a family life centred on the worship of God.

Nonna was known as a diligent prayer woman who faithfully guided her husband and children in the faith. In their household, worship is not just a weekly activity, but a lifestyle. As a result, their son grew up to be one of the great theologians of the early church. This family shows that faithfulness in home worship has a cross-generational impact.

Joshua 24:15 affirms an existential decision: choosing whom to worship. Joshua's statement was not only a personal declaration, but a family commitment. Theologically, worship is not just a liturgical ritual, but a total surrender of life to God. In the context of the family, worship is the foundation that unites values, direction, and spiritual identity. Without worship, families are easily divided by various modern “gods” such as materialism, busyness, and personal egos.

There are three practical applications that can be made to build a family that worships God:

First, make worship a priority, not an additional option. The family needs to set a special time to commune with God, both through family worship and attendance in congregational fellowship. Worship should not be sacrificed for the sake of other busyness.

Second, build family spirituality consistently. Family worship, through prayer, praise, and the reading of the Word, should be the rhythm of life, not just done when there are problems. This consistency forms a solid spiritual character.

Third, instilling faith through example. Like Nonna, who guides her family, parents are called to be priests in the household. Children learn worship not only from teaching, but from real-life examples.

In the end, a family that worships God is a family that makes Allah the centre of life. They may face the challenges of the times, but they remain steadfast because their foundations have not changed.

Prayer:
Holy Lord God, we long to make You the centre of our family. Teach us to worship You faithfully, not just with words, but with our whole lives. Strengthen our commitment like Joshua, so that we and our household will continue to choose to worship You. In the name of the Lord Jesus, we pray, Amen.
