God Provides for the Family
God Provides for the Family
“My God will supply all your needs according to his riches and glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19).
Bible Reading of the Year: 2 Chronicles 9-12
In the early 20th century, a famous evangelist named George Müller became a great inspiration to many Christian families. Although his ministry began earlier, his influence continued into the 20th century through thousands of testimonies of faith. Müller is known for raising thousands of orphans without asking for human help. He only prayed to God.
In
one of the famous stories, one morning in the orphanage, there was no food at
all for the children. But Müller asked all the children to sit at the dinner
table and pray in thanksgiving. Not long after, a baker came knocking on the
door and said that God moved his heart to make bread for them. Shortly after, a
milk deliveryman had a wheel failure right in front of the orphanage and gave
them all the milk so that it wouldn't be wasted.
This story is not a spiritual fairy tale, but a testimony of how
God is able to take care of the needs of His people. Philippians 4:19 reminds us that the source of family maintenance is not primarily economic power, position, or human relationships, but God himself. The Apostle Paul wrote this verse when he understood that God is a Father who never neglects to care for His children.
However, God's providence does not mean that the life of a believer is free from struggle. There are times when the need is great, income is limited, and the future seems uncertain. But it is precisely in the midst of such circumstances that the family's faith is tested: do we believe that God's hand is still at work?
God meets the needs of families not always in an instant way, but in a way that is appropriate, sufficient, and wise. Sometimes God opens the door to work, sends help through others, gives health, or brings peace when circumstances have not changed. God is never late. His calendar is different from the human calendar. And yes, God never panics even when the account balance starts to “speak in tongues.”
Here
are three practical applications that Christian families can do, namely:
First,
build a family prayer altar every day. Families who pray together learn to
leave their worries to God. Prayer is not the last escape, but the first breath
of Christian family life.
Second,
learn to live faithfully and responsibly. God's providence does not teach
laziness. Every member of the family needs to work, manage finances wisely, and
live simply.
Third, train your heart to be grateful in all circumstances. Gratitude opens our eyes to see that God keeps working, even in small things that are often unrealised.
Prayer:
Loving Lord God, thank you that You are the Father who nurtures our family. When we are worried about the necessities of life, teach us to keep believing in You. Give wisdom in work, faithfulness in prayer, and a heart that is always grateful. We believe that You are able to meet all our needs according to Your wealth and glory. In the name of the Lord Jesus, we pray. Amen.
