The Primary Priority of the Christian Family
The Primary Priority of the Christian Family
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33).
Bible Reading of the Year: 2 Chronicles 2-5
In the 19th century, there was a famous missionary family from England, namely the Hudson Taylor family, the founder of the mission service to China through the China Inland Mission. In various service histories, this family lived very simply. They often experience food shortages, threats of disease, and even rejection from the surrounding community. But there is one principle they never abandon: putting God's Kingdom ahead of personal comfort.
Once upon a time, their family's economic conditions were very difficult. Food supplies are running low, while the need for services continues to increase. In that situation, Hudson Taylor and his wife still chose to help the poor who were more in need. Humanly, the decision seems absurd.
But a few days later, help came through someone who sent help without being asked. This story is proof that when families put God first, God never neglects to take care of their lives.
Matthew 6:33 is not just a memorised verse. This verse is the principle of Christian family life. Jesus did not say, “seek riches first,” “seek comfort first,” or “seek popularity first”. Christ affirmed that the believer's first priority is the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. The word “before” indicates the order of priority. Many Christian families are destroyed not because of a lack of money, but because God is no longer placed in the leading position.
A spiritually healthy family makes God the centre of their decisions, the centre of love, and the centre of their future. The modern world encourages families to be busy pursuing material pursuits, social status, and personal ambitions. But without God, all of that can turn into exhausting emptiness. As theologian A.W. Tozer said, “Whatever is in the first place in our lives is actually our god.” This statement is an important reflection for every Christian family.
Here
are three practical applications that Christian families can do, namely:
First, build a family altar every day. Take time to pray
together, read God's Word, and strengthen each other spiritually. A house
filled with prayer will be stronger to withstand the storms of life.
Second, prioritise decisions based on God's will. In work,
children's education, finances, and ministry, ask first: “Does this glorify the
Lord?”
Third, teach children to love God more than the world. Children learn not only from advice, but from example. When they see their parents putting the Lord first, they will grow up with a strong foundation of faith.
The Christian family is called not only to live together, but to walk together toward God's will. When God's Kingdom is a top priority, God is able to nurture, bless, and guide families through every season of life.
Prayer:
Loving Lord God, teach our family to always put You above all things. Do not let us pursue the world more than to pursue Your presence. Mould our household into a family that fears the Lord, is faithful to Your Word, and lives for the glory of Your name. In the name of the Lord Jesus, we pray. Amen.
