Keeping Shining in the Midst of a Dark World

Keeping Shining in the Midst of a Dark World

“You are the light of the world. A city located on a mountain is impossible to hide. After all, they did not light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a lampstand so that it illuminated everyone in the house. Thus let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16).

Bible Reading of the Year: Job 11-13

In the history of the Israelites in the Old Testament, there were very dark times. When the people lived in rebellion, idolatry, and disobedience to God, they lost their way of life. But in the midst of this darkness, Allah always raises up those who remain faithful to Him. One example is the prophet Daniel.

When the people of Judah were exiled to Babylon, Daniel lived in an environment that did not know the God of Israel. He faced cultural pressure, political threats, and temptations to abandon his faith. Yet Daniel continued to live righteously before God. Throughout his life, God's name was glorified even by the kings of the Gentiles (Daniel 6:26-27).

Daniel's story reminds us that light is not needed on a clear day, but on a dark night. Similarly, Jesus calls every believer to be the light of the world. The world today is filled with various forms of darkness: lies, injustice, hatred, greed, and a life away from God. In such a situation, believers are not called to hide, but to radiate the light of Christ.

Jesus said, “You are the light of the world.” This word indicates identity as well as responsibility. The light does not speak of who we are naturally, but of who we are in Christ. When Christ lives in our hearts, His light will shine through our words, attitudes, and actions.

There are three practical applications that we can do, namely:

First, be an example through godly character. The light of Christ is seen through a life that reflects love, honesty, humility, and holiness. People may not read the Bible, but they read our lives every day.

Dare to speak the truth with love. To be enlightened means not to compromise with sin. But the truth must be conveyed with love and wisdom so that it can build up and bring people to God.

Third, serve and do good to others. Jesus affirmed that people will see our good works and glorify our Father in heaven. Simple actions such as helping the needy, comforting the grieving, and supporting the weak can be a light that brings hope.

The world may be getting darker, but even the slightest light can still defeat the darkness. Therefore, don't be afraid to be different. Continue to shine for Christ wherever God places us. When our lives radiate His light, many people will see the glory of God and come to Him.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us to be the light of the world. Help us not to hide the light You have given, but to radiate it through our words, attitudes, and actions every day. Give it the courage to live righteously in the midst of a challenging world. Use our lives to be a blessing to many and bring glory to Your name. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
