When Prayers Have Not Been Answered

When Prayers Have Not Been Answered

“Jesus told them a parable to make it clear that they should always pray without ceasing” (Luke 18:1).

Bible Reading of the Year: Job 29-31

One of the most moving true stories in the family history of the Israelites is the story of Hannah and Elkanah (1 Samuel 1). Hannah was a woman who desperately wanted a child, but for years she lived in disappointment because her womb remained closed. This was made all the more painful because she often received insults from Peninnah, another wife of Elkanah. However, in the midst of this suffering, Hannah did not abandon the Lord.

Every year, he came to the house of the Lord and poured out his heart in prayer. Even once, he prayed so fervently that Eli the priest thought he was drunk. Hannah's prayers had not been answered for years, but she persevered. At God's appointed time, Hannah gave birth to Samuel, who God later used to be a great prophet for Israel.

Hannah's story teaches that not all prayers are answered instantly. There are times when God allows us to wait. Waiting is not a sign that God is not listening, but rather part of the process He uses to shape our faith and character.

In Luke 18:1, Jesus taught His disciples to pray always and not to become discouraged. God knows that people are easily discouraged when the expected answer has not yet come. We may have prayed for healing, work, home restoration, service, or other needs. But day after day, month after month, even year after year, without any visible change.

It is at such times that true faith is put to the test. Praying when things are good is easy. But still praying when there are no signs of an answer requires deep trust in God. God is never late. He sees the whole picture of our lives, while we see only a small part. What we perceive as tardiness is often God's preparation to provide something better and more in accordance with His will.

Therefore, do not let unanswered prayers turn us away from God. Instead, make the waiting period an opportunity to draw closer to Him. The God who heard Hannah's prayer is the same God who hears our prayers today. He keeps working, even when we haven't seen the results yet.

Three practical applications that can be done, namely:

First, keep praying diligently. Don't stop praying just because you haven't seen the answer. Perseverance in prayer shows our trust in God.

Second, leave the answer time to God. Learn to accept that God has perfect timing and is never wrong in acting.

Third, use the waiting period to grow. Fill the waiting time by reading God's Word, serving, and building a more intimate relationship with Him.

Prayer:

Loving Heavenly Father, we are grateful that You are the God who always hears the prayers of Your children. When we face times of waiting, and our prayers have not been answered, strengthen our hearts not to become weak and despairing. Teach us to keep believing that You are at work behind the scenes. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we pray and give thanks. Amen.
