The Harvest Is Abundant
The Harvest Is Abundant
“He said to them, 'The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few. Therefore, ask the master of the harvest that he will send labourers into the harvest” (Luke 10:2).
Bible Reading of the Year: Ezra 8-10
In the 4th century, there was a church figure named Basil of Caesarea who served in the region of Caesarea. At that time, there was a severe famine. Many poor people are abandoned, sick, and die without help. Many Christians were busy debating doctrine, but Basil saw a real field of ministry before his eyes. He established shelters, hospitals, soup kitchens, and places of service for the poor.
People dubbed its ministry complex the “Basilica,” a city of love for those who suffered. Interestingly, Basil once said that the church should not only be a place where people preach, but also a place where people become the answer to the world's suffering. He understood one important thing: the harvest was plentiful, but the labourers were few.
Jesus' words in Luke 10:2 are still very relevant today. The world is full of people who are thirsty for love, lose their way of life, are hurt emotionally, and are far from God. Many souls need the gospel, but not everyone is willing to plunge into service. Many people want to enjoy God's blessings, but few are willing to be used by God.
Jesus did not say that the harvest was small. In fact, the harvest is plentiful. This means that the open service opportunities are very wide. In the family, there is a soul that needs to be prayed for. On campus, there are friends who need hope. On social media, there are people who are secretly struggling with depression and loneliness. Even in the church itself, there are still many people who need to be strengthened.
The main problem is not the lack of farms, but the lack of workers. Therefore, Jesus commanded His disciples to pray that God would send new workers. Interestingly, often the answer to that prayer is ourselves. God is not always looking for the greatest people, but the ones who are willing.
Here are three practical applications that can be done,
namely:
First, start
serving from small things. Not everyone is called to preach in the pulpit, but
everyone can be a conduit to God's love through simple care, prayer, and help.
Second, make
prayer part of the mission. Pray for souls who do not know Christ, servants of
the Lord, missionaries, and churches who are serving in difficult places.
Third, use the talents and media you have for God. The digital era opens up new service fields. One spiritual content, one message of encouragement, or one act of love can be used by God to reach many people.
God is still looking for workers for His harvest. The question is not whether the field exists, but whether we want to be sent.
Prayer:
Loving
Lord God, thank You that You still give us the opportunity to be labourers in
Your field. Forgive us if we have been too busy with ourselves and have not
cared enough for the souls who need Your help. Give us a sensitive heart, the
courage to serve, and a real love for others. Use our lives as instruments for
the glory of Your name. In the name of the Lord Jesus, we pray. Amen.
